Adam Taub, of the University of Colorado, Boulder, received the Award, which includes a prize of $3,000, for his film La Quinceañera, which documents the traditional Hispanic "coming of age" celebration of a young girl and her family who have undergone difficult times.
The Angelus Student Film Festival was created by Family Theater Productions, a Hollywood-based Catholic media outlet, to honor and showcase future filmmakers as they explore and create works of compassion and respect for the dignity of the human person. It is part of the larger four-day City of Angels Film Festival, of which Maryknoll is an affiliate sponsor.
The mission of the City of Angels Film Festival is to bring people of faith and the creative community of Los Angeles together to explore and celebrate cinema's artistic, spiritual and social dimensions.
Maryknoll also co-sponsors the Catholic Academy of Communication Arts Professionals' Gabriel Awards, which honor works of excellence in broadcasting for the positive, creative treatment of concerns to humankind. The most important criterion of a winning program is its ability to uplift and nourish the human spirit.
"The Gabriels are designed to encourage broadcasters to promote higher human values and fight injustice," said Rich, who views the week-end festival as an opportunity for engagement between faith and the people who work in the film and media sector.
"They are the myth-makers—the storytellers," he said. "People get their values from them and it is our hope to build bridges between the culture and faith."
At Maryknoll, Rich is involved in producing documentaries, the Spanish/English television series Caminante and The Field Afar, and the award-winning weekly radio program Voices of Our World. He also is the executive producer of Lives for Sale, a documentary on human trafficking that premiered on PBS and the Hallmark Channel this past January.
